The base's primary mission is to send and receive radio signals to search for extraterrestrial civilizations. During the Cultural Revolution, astrophysicist Ye Wenjie is sent to work here and establishes initial contact with the Trisolaran civilization. The Red Coast Base is the starting point of the story, where Ye Wenjie sends the signal that attracts the attention of the Trisolarans.
